Mission About Us

Prevent Medical Error (PME) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing best practices. It is estimated that medical errors are among the top five leading causes of death in the United States. Misdiagnosis, Adverse Drug Events (ADEs), transfers of care, loss of focus on patient care, and cascades of small errors are leading catalysts of negative outcomes. Globalization and outsourcing of medical products and services to India and China also increase adverse events. Prevent Medical Error looks at current systems and changing environments to identify potential gaps and advance best practices that make health care more efficient and effective.

When gaps are not properly identified or adequately responded to, they cannot be closed and may continue unchecked. Harm is needlessly compounded and becomes exponential in effect. Patients and providers may be wrongfully miscast and held morally and medically responsible. Ultimately, patients, providers, taxpayers and stockholders may all be held legally and financially accountable for preventable adverse events.

When patients and providers collaborate to stay focused on best practices, gaps are more easily identified. Adequate prevention and response systems can be put in place proactively. Reducing gaps protects a vulnerable population - patients - from needless suffering and expense. It also reduces costs. Cost savings may either be realized, or utilized to provide better oversight and higher quality health care to more people. Health care issues are among the most pressing issues that society faces today, so preventing and mitigating the effects of gaps by identifying and advancing simple strategies to reduce them provides enormous positive social and economic benefit.

The idea to start a nonprofit originated with the development of medical emergency strategies, including Medic Alert jewelry and emergency medical information communication strategies. These endeavors are ongoing and evolving to include specialty Medic Alert bracelets and other best practices, including Chinese and Indian prescription drug and device safety initiatives. Prevent Medical Error's efforts are grounded in the medical and financial issues associated with health care. They are also based on professional and personal experiences. Our ability to explore and advance best practices would not be possible without the common sense and sound practices of an expanding number of supporters who help keep things on task and advocate on our behalf.
